Mastering your poker strategy of choice is not easy, due mainly to the fact that there are so many rules and variations of poker. Whether you play online poker, poker in person, or maybe you simply get a healthy mix of both, if you wish to maximize your chances of winning online poker, it’s important that you understand how to play pocket pairs in poker. Here’s a quick look at a few basic principles of pocket pairs.

The importance of pocket pairs

For those of you who consider yourselves true poker aficionados, you’ll know that one of the most coveted hands in poker, is of course, pocket pairs. If we’re talking odds and statistics, the odds of you getting dealt pocket pairs is once out of every seventeen hand deals. Use them incorrectly however, and you do nothing but waste chips, and your own time. If you have small pocket pairs for example, if you’re wishing for a positive outcome, there are some things in the game that you must look out for. For example, there must be enough opponents to begin with, you must be able to hit your initial set and then have it hold up, and you must be confident that other players at the table don’t hold a stronger pocket pair than yourself.

Pocket Pairs tips

Play smartly with small pocket pairs – If you’re dealt a high pocket pair which is initially very strong, I.E a pair of 10s, or a pair of Jacks, you can be a little more confident and can perhaps hold off slightly, due to the fact that you know you have a strong hand. Small pocket pairs however, in the form of say, a pair of 2s, will need a little help in order to become successful. Hold off on going in too early with a set of small pocket pairs, and wait for the flop. Once those next 3 cards are turned over, you’ll now get a much clearer idea of whether your hand is still strong. If for example, another 2 is revealed on the flop, or better yet, another set of 2s, you’ll now have 4 of a kind, giving you great odds of winning.

Don’t be afraid to fold on the flop – In poker, when playing online poker for example, you will often notice that some players are stubborn, and that they refuse to fold when they have initially called, or perhaps even raised. If you have pocket pairs, a great poker strategy is to wait for the flop and see what the next 3 cards are. If they suck and they do nothing for your hand, well, you may wish to fold.
